Matt Markey is the Outdoors Editor for The Toledo Blade newspaper. He graduated from St. Wendelin High school and received a degree in journalism from Bowling Green State University. Matt has been at The Blade for 24 years, he has worked for newspapers in Orlando, Bowling Green and Fostoria. Prior to that, Markey worked in the movie business in California, Montana, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico for about 6 years. He has been The Blade’s outdoors editor for the past six years, before that he covered Ohio State football and the athletic teams at Michigan, the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University.
Matt has won numerous awards from the Outdoor Writers of Ohio, Southeast Outdoors Press Association and the Associated Press. His work has won five first place awards at the recent Outdoor Writers of Ohio annual conference.
Matt’s parents, Dr. and Mrs. Stephen Markey, MD of Fostoria, were both US Army World War II veterans. Matt’s mother, First Lieutenant Helen L. Matthews Markey, is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Matt’s wife of 30 years, Linda, works as the HR manager at a manufacturing facility in BG. Matt and Linda have 4 children together. Blaise, 29, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in food and nutrition from BGSU. He is a Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist, and works for Abbott Pharmaceuticals in Columbus. One of his internships was with the Ohio State football team working with the team nutritionist. Lauren, 27, has two degrees from Ohio State – International Business and Spanish. She lives in San Diego, and is the marketing and sales manager for Bonita Country Club. Zoe, 22, is a junior on the Dean’s list at BGSU, majoring in marketing and communications, and working full time at the Bowling Green Community Center. Aidan, 20, is a junior at Northwestern, and is also on the Dean’s list. He is a journalism major and has served as the digital managing editor for the Northwestern newspaper. He is working at a Northwestern Hospital downtown Chicago this summer in the marketing department. In the fall quarter, Aiden will intern at Instagram in New York City. Aidan was a 4.3 GPA student in high school, senior class president, all-district varsity basketball player and all-league academic team.
